What is TOEFL Exam?

TOEFL full form: Test of English as Foreign Language

TOEFL is a test of English language in foreign countries. It is a standardized test to measure the English of non-native speakers willing to apply for American Universities. All English language academies and professional bodies accept it. It is one of the two major test for English language along with IELTS. TOEFL is an ETS (Educational Testing Service) trademark. Here is all the information about TOEFL test.

Types of TOEFL test:

There are mainly two types of TOEFL:

1. TOEFL IBT test 2018 – 2019:

IBT stands for TOEFL internet bases test. This test has taken over the older TOEFL CBT (TOEFL Computer based Test) test. TOEFL CBT was terminated in 2006, and the scores are not valid. Where internet and computer facilities are available, TOEFL IBT test is taken. Most of the test centres in the world, including India, had internet based testing system of TOEFL.

2. TOEFL PBT Test:

PBT stands for Paper Based Test. In the areas of the world where internet facilities and Computers are not available, TOEFL  paper based testing is done. It is now replaced by TOEFL PDT, Paper Delivered Test from 2017. The test pattern and Scoring is different than TOEFL IBT.

Other Types of TOEFL test:

1. TOEFL Junior:

TOEFL junior is assessment of middle school level English Proficiency Test. TOEFL junior standard is paper based, while TOEFL junior comprehensive is computer based exam. Subjects for TOEFL junior standard are Reading Comprehension, Listening Comprehension and Language Form and Meaning. Subjects for TOEFL junior Comprehensive test are Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking Comprehension.

2. TOEFL ITP Test:

TOEFL ITP stands for Institutional Training Program. The test is used to assess English Language Proficiency for institutes’ internal structure. These are closely related to IELTS PBT. The only difference here is the exclusion is Test of Written Expression.

TOEFL test eligibility criteria 2018 - 2019:

ETS has not set definite eligibility criteria for TOEFL test. Any candidate, who is wishing to study abroad, or to work, can take the TOEFL test. It is an English language proficiency test for the admission into English speaking universities and colleges. There is no age limit to the test as well. However, the university or college that candidate is applying for, might have a minimum scoring criteria for the admission.

TOEFL Exam Syllabus 2018 – 2019:

Four modules: reading, listening, writing, and speaking cover TOEFL test format for iBT online test. The TOEFL structure and syllabus for four of them is as follows.

TOEFL Reading: - 

Reading is all about reading the passages and answering the questions asked. In reading, there will be 3-5 passages and there will be 12-14 questions in each passage to answer. The total no of questions to be answered will be 50 in the duration of 60-100 minutes. The score will the based on the correctness of each answer in each passage.

 

TOEFL Listening: - 

In listening, there will be two types of conversations that will be heard. One will be a short conversation and other will be long conversation. In short conversations after short conversation there will 1 question that will be multiple-choice question having options to select from. While in long conversation, there will be multiple questions to be answered. In listening there will two sections, which are as follows-

  • 4-5 lectures that will be 3-5 minutes long and will have 500-800 words with 6 question each and total no of questions will be 30

  • 2- 3 conversations that will be for more than 3 minutes there will be 12-25 exchanges and there will be 5 questions each. The total no of questions will more than 40 and the time duration will be 60-90 minutes.

 

TOEFL Speaking: - 

If you want to score well in speaking you should try to fulfil all the requirements of the exam. One should try to avoid mistakes. The division in speaking is as follows:-

  • In first section, there will be 2 independent tasks. The preparation time for this task will be 15 seconds and the time to respond will be 45 seconds.

  • In second section, there will be 2 integrated tasks. The task will be as follows read-listen-speak. The preparation time for this section will be 30 seconds and the response time will be 60 seconds.

  • In last section, there will be 2 integrated tasks. The task will be as follows listen-speak. The preparation time for this task will be 20 seconds and the response time will be 60 seconds.

The total no of questions will be 6 for speaking and the total duration will be 20 minutes.

 

TOEFL Writing: -

The essay should effectively address a topic. The response should be well-organised and well-developed using relevant explanations and detailed support. Furthermore, it should also display unity of thought, a steady progress and collective thoughts. Make sure your grammar is correct, but also do not be repetitive with sentence structure. Bring variety in sentence formation for higher scores.

(A) 1 integrated task –

Read/Listen/Write (20 minutes)

(Reading time: 3 min; listening time: 2 min; Writing time: 15 min)

(B) 1 independent task (30 minutes)

Total time: 50 minutes

How to prepare for TOEFL?

Here are some tips for TOEFL test preparation.

How to Register for TOEFL?

The date for the test can be registered through an online procedure on the official site of ETS.

  • The availability of the TOEFL test dates can be checked by selection of your country / city / state.

  • After filling your personal details on the online form, TOEFL test fees has to be paid in accordance to the process mentioned online.

  • Then the conformation is precipitated and a test centre is been allotted.

  • Candidate has to appear on that particular day to the TOEFL test center.

TOEFL Exam Pattern 2018 – 2019:

TOEFL test Pattern consist of two types. One is iBT exam and other is PBT exam. In India, the iBT exam pattern is available. There are 30 TOEFL test centres in India. TOEFL exam duration for iBT test varies from 3 hours 10 minutes to maximum of 4 hours 20 minutes. The TOEFL test details is as follows:-

The total score is the sum of scores of all the four sections. The scores are been posted after the 10 days of exam date. The TOEFL test scores can be viewed online as well. Your official reports will be sent to four institutes of your choice once they are declared, by ETS.

TOEFL IBT Scores:

The TOEFL score range for iBT is 0-120. This is done in order to offer a complete and accurate picture of the candidate’s ability. While automated scoring method has the advantage of being unbiased, it does not measure the effectiveness of the language and content. Human ratters are required to attend to a wider variety of features, such as the quality of ideas and content as well as form.

TOEFL Results 2018 – 2019:

Universities have set a proper standard for TOEFL test score. A candidate who applies should score range from 61 to 110 to apply at university. Candidate can see their results after 2 weeks of their test date. You can log in to your TOEFL iBT account on the TOEFL test Registration website to see your scores. Printed score reports will be mailed approximately 13 days after your test date.

TOEFL Score Validity:

TOEFL scores are valid for two years and they can be sent to the institutes of your choice during that time.
