ABOUT PTE

What is PTE?

PTE (Pearson Test of English) is an English language proficiency test, which is used as an eligibility criterion for admission process in universities all around the world. There are two formats of the PTE: PTE Academic Test and PTE General Test. Many applicants take PTE test for Australian Immigration process, too.

What differs PTE from other English language proficiency tests, is the scoring methods and the results. PTE declares the results in much smaller time duration than its close competitors that are IELTS and TOEFL. As the scoring done for the PTE tests are computerised, the results are much accurate and quicker than other tests. This makes PTE test favourite among the students who are in a hurry.

PTE 2018 Registration Dates

There are no fixed dates for the PTE Academic and willing applicants have to register on the PTE website first to check when an exam date is available. The availability of PTE Exam dates depends on the availability of test centre, too.

PTE Preparation:

The PTE Academic, Pearson Test of English, is an English language ability test that evaluates the applicant on four major factors, viz. speaking, listening, writing and reading abilities. This is a secure computer-based test of two-hour duration. Some of the questions even assess two different skills simultaneously. You can improve your scores by practicing and preparing well regardless of your current knowledge.

Speaking Section:

  • For speaking, one must practice “Read Aloud” part as much as possible. Practicing with long sentences and tongue twisters will help you have a good speech. Raising the voice at the beginning of the voice and a toned down voice towards the end makes the speech sound authentic.
  • Practice repeating the sentences to sharpen up your memory, if you do not remember everything, repeat what you remember. With description of the pictures, learn the terminology that different types of charts and graphs represent.
  • The most important part of speech is pronunciation; learn from google and YouTube how to pronounce certain words. Listen to native English speakers and try imitating their accent.

Writing Section:

  • While summarising a text, try to keep the sentences shorter. Make precise points with good grammar and vocabulary. Complete the summary in maximum 45 words.
  • While writing the essay, follow the universal format essays are written in, that is: introductory first paragraph, second paragraph with arguments and examples containing main body, and the final paragraph for the conclusion. Make sure the spellings and grammar is correct.

Reading Section:

  • Read the paragraphs carefully. The skills to reading comprehension can be acquired by practicing only. Practising more and more paragraphs will increase your reading speed, too. You should always read the questions before you start with the paragraph.
  • In rearrangement of the sentences to form a paragraph, always look for what can be the first and last line of the paragraph. Those are the easiest to find.  The first line of any paragraph will be like a header. Giving away the idea and the last line will be a conclusion.
  • Lines that start with pronouns like he/she/they can never be first lines. If you see words like however, besides, although, those sentences would be contradicting the sentence right before them.

Listening Section:

  • Be attentive while listening; always pay attention to the words. Watch videos with subtitles and then without them. Listen and watch videos of spoken native English.
  • While listening, keep your mind running. Focus on what speaker wants to say, and which are the important words repeated as they are the clues.
  • Read the questions first before the audio start, which will tell you where to look for the answer when the audio is playing. Listen till the end.
